Kai Salinas — 2017 AMC 8 Math Competition

Kai has been diligently preparing for his first AMC 8 Math Competition to be held on November 16th. He worked through probability. We did some basic counting, combinations, and permutations. I introduced Kai to replacement vs without replacement as well as derivations from probability first principles. He should be solid with geometry and teasing out uses for Pythagorean Theorem including shapes inscribed in other shapes where in he needs to grab a radius or arc to compute some function of the circumference or area. He is definitely looking forward to his first AMC 8 competition.

What is the AMC 8?

The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers.

Mathematics knows no races or geographic boundaries; for mathematics, the cultural world is one country.

– David Hilbert

Topics on the AMC 8

Possible topics include but are not limited to: Probability, Estimation, Percents, Elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, Spatial Visualization, Everyday Applications, and Reading/Interpreting Graphs.
