Perfect Practice Prevents Poor Performance

Seems like such a simple task – go to Sycuan Pine Glen and find out what club to hit off the tee.  Turns out, it was easier when Zoë was shorter than it is now that she is taller.  Before, we could just sort of sneak up on holes because she didn’t have the distance.  Then, we would just chip up to an elevated green and putt once or twice.  Now, we have a couple of clubs in the bag to get the right distance, but lack of consistent strikes and being a little bit left or right of a Pine Glen green leaves an impossible up-and-down… well we don’t want to live like that in a multi-round tournament.  I noticed a smaller competitor, a year younger than Zoë, was beating her the same way she used to beat older girls… hit short, chip up, putt.  We still haven’t hit 59 yet; we are currently between 61-67.

Junior Golf Scoreboard

It occurred to me that there isn’t really a first mover advantage to getting on Junior Golf Scoreboard(JGS). While your golf handicap is a leading indicator of your golf progress, (it takes the best 10 of the last 20 scores), JGS is a lagging indicator.  If you improve over the year as all serious junior golfers do, your JGS ranking we be weighed down by those earlier poor scores. That’s right, the 109 we just got at Lake San Marcos is going to stay on Zoë’s record for an entire year.  By way of example, say the next Class of 2027 girl comes on to JGS and is playing the same level as Zoë currently plays, the new girl’s JGS ranking will be lower because only her recent scores would be reflected.

Having talent is one thing, but you have to do the work…
